than just to get lost in all my selfish thoughts...I wanna know what it'd be like
to find perfection in my pride
to see nothing in the light
or turn it off, in all my spite...I'll Turn It Off
"I've changed a lot since I wrote my last album, Red. Emotionally speaking, 1989 is not a heartbreak record. My music is derived from what's happening in my personal life, and I haven't had my heart broken. When I'm deeply hurt, I usually respond by writing exactly how I feel in a song, but I just haven't been devastated in the last couple of years. I made the decision to spend time on my own and figure out who I am. When you're in love you tend to prioritize that other person's opinion and almost value it as much, if not more, than your own opinion. When you take the other person out of the scenario and you're walking through life on your own, you end up figuring out what you actually like without anyone else's input."
